Portrait Tattoos: People, Pets & Icons
A portrait tattoo is one of the most meaningful pieces you can wear. I specialise in lifelike black and grey portraits—family members, beloved pets, cultural icons—executed with precision and care at my private Chapeltown studio.
The Portrait Process
A great portrait tattoo starts with a clear reference. I work from high-quality photographs to capture likeness, expression, and character. The goal is not a photocopy—it's a recognizable, dignified representation that will age well.
I use a limited palette of black and grey to create depth, texture, and dimension. This approach ensures the portrait remains readable and striking for decades. No color means no fading—just timeless, professional work.
Standard portraits (people or pets, without complex backgrounds) typically fit within a 4-hour session. Larger pieces or those with detailed backgrounds may require a full-day sitting.

What Works Best for Portraits
“I'd like a portrait of my late father from a wedding photo. Just his face and shoulders, A4 size, on my upper arm.”
Why this works: A clear subject, defined size, and a single focal point. I can deliver a striking, recognizable portrait within a standard session.
“I want a full back piece with my mum, dad, three kids, two dogs, and a sunset—all from different photos, blended together.”
Why this fails: Too many subjects, conflicting references, and an unrealistic scope. Complex multi-figure compositions require multiple sessions and careful planning. Start with one strong portrait.
Session Allowances for Portraits
Portrait work is billed by session duration. Simpler pieces fit shorter sessions; larger or more detailed work needs more time.
