Do you want a cohesive masterpiece or a collection of memories? Here is the real difference between a themed project and a custom sleeve, and how it affects your time in the chair.
When clients come to my studio in Chapeltown asking for a sleeve, they usually fall into one of two camps. They either have a vague idea ("I want a Greek mythology sleeve") or they have a folder full of specific photos ("I want this lion, this clock, and this date").
In the industry, we distinguish these as Themed Sleeves and Custom Sleeves.
They might sound the same, but the process, the flow, and the final look are completely different. Coming from a construction background, I look at it like this: one is letting the architect design the house to fit the landscape; the other is trying to fit specific furniture into a room that might not hold it.
Here is the breakdown.
This is where you give me a broad concept—Greek Gods, Jungle, Chicano, Religious—and let me run with it.
This is a much more specific project. You want your dog, your child’s footprint, a specific pocket watch set to a specific time, and a date script.
If you want a piece of art that stops traffic and flows perfectly with your muscles, go for a Themed Sleeve. Trust me to pick the images that will look best as a tattoo.
If you want a memorial or a timeline of your life, go for a Custom Sleeve. Just understand that we might need to compromise on layout to make everything fit.
Both are priced on my Honest Pricing (duration-based) model. However, because Custom Sleeves often require more complex stenciling and "shoehorning" of elements, they can sometimes take more sessions to finish than a free-flowing Themed Sleeve.
Got a concept in mind? Whether it's a broad theme or a specific list, let’s sit down and map it out.
