Black & Grey Realistic Portrait Tattoos
A portrait tattoo is the ultimate tribute. Whether it is honouring a loved one, celebrating a musical icon, or capturing a character from your favourite film, the margin for error is zero. It has to look exactly like them.
At Liam Rebel Tattoos, I specialise in high-contrast black and grey realism. I move away from the distractions of busy high-street tattoo shops to offer a private, focused environment. This allows me to dedicate my full attention to the intricate shading and fine details required to bring a face to life on skin.
Portrait Styles & Subjects
While I specialise in the style of realism, the subjects vary. I cover three main areas of portraiture:
-
Family & Memorials: Capturing the likeness of a parent, grandparent, or child. I treat these pieces with the utmost respect, ensuring the spirit of your loved one is preserved perfectly.
-
Pop Culture & Icons: From movie characters (horror, crime, sci-fi) to musical legends. If you are looking for a highly detailed piece of Walter White, Thomas Shelby, or a music idol, I love taking on these projects.
-
Classical & Statues: Greek mythology (Zeus, Poseidon) and classical religious sculpture work. These make for incredible sleeves and large-scale pieces.

The Fear of "Bad Portraits" – And How We Avoid It
We have all seen "botched" portraits online. That happens when an artist tries to rush or lacks a foundation in realism.
-
Approval Process: You are never in the dark. I design the piece based on your photos and you approve the mockup before we start.
-
Lighting & Contrast: I look for reference photos with great lighting. High contrast (light and shadow) is the secret to a tattoo that holds up over time and doesn't look "flat."
Your Booking & Design Process
I have removed the hassle of back-and-forth emails.

The Experience: Come to my private studio in Chapeltown. It’s just you and me—no loud shop noise—so you can relax, watch a movie, and sit comfortably while I work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best placement for a portrait?
For realism, flat and large surfaces are best to prevent the face from wrapping or distorting. The outer bicep, forearm, calf, or thigh are the ideal canvases for portraits.
Can you fix an old portrait done by someone else?
I generally focus on fresh work to ensure the quality is up to my standards. However, if you have a faded piece, feel free to email me; depending on the density, we may be able to rework it.
Do you do colour portraits?
No. I focus exclusively on Black and Grey Realism. This specialisation is what allows me to achieve such high-quality textures and smooth gradients.
